KUHLKEN-OSTERBERG 2013
KUHLKEN-OSTERBERG 2013

Collector’s Label Story from Dr. Julie Kuhlken:

Building on the story behind the 2012 vintage, the musical inspiration behind the 2013 vintage is Stravinsky’s
Firebird Suite.  The 2013 vintage was very difficult, but the Texas wine industry emerged from it even stronger.

Tasting Notes
The 2013 KO is notably fresh on the nose with ripe strawberry notes, raspberry jam, black cherries and hints of spice. On the palate you’ll find these red fruits complemented by black pepper and tar which linger pleasantly on the palate.
Production Notes
Composition: 15% Tempranillo, 30% Touriga Nacional, 30% Tinta Amarela, 25% Syrah
Winemaker Notes
This is our second vintage of the Kuhlken-Osterberg series. For this vintage, we have added Tinta Amarela as well as Tempranillo to the blend. Tinta Amarela is another Portuguese variety which is traditional in port wines. We find it to be slightly softer and more floral than Touriga and it has the ability to ripen beautifully and long into the hot Texas seasons. Tempranillo from the estate brings in one of the grapes that has become traditional here at Pedernales, and we love it’s cherry notes. We hand harvest in our estate, then small bin ferment each lot separately to ensure that we are able to find the fullest expression of each variety before beginning blending trials. This wine was aged for 14 months in a combination of New French and American oak barrels and then further conditioned in the bottle before release.
Food Pairing Notes
A fine steak, braised lamb ribs, and roast beef.
