2015 Tempranillo Reserve
2015 Tempranillo Reserve

The 2015 Texas Tempranillo blends lots from our key High Plains vineyard sites. Each was harvested, crushed, and fermented in the late summer of 2015 and subsequently barreled in a mix of French and American Oak for over a year.  For this blend we drew from several premier vineyards across the state, but more than half comes the Bingham Family Vineyards southwest of Lubbock Texas.  We have worked with the Bingham family for nearly 10 years now, and are proud to have their Tempranillo from the “Old Place” vineyard as a backbone for this wine.

It’s not every year that we find ourselves harvesting into October in Texas where hot summers can bring early harvests.  However, 2015 saw a cool August and September and led to Tempranillo harvesting in late September and some blocks hanging all the way into October. The result was improved flavor and aromatics along with a few anxious nights of waiting for the winemaking team.

Tasting Notes
The Tempranillo Reserve is our select blend of High Plains and Hill Country Tempranillo, reflecting the highest quality in the 2015 vintage from both our estate and partner vineyards. This year, we set aside a portion of our Tempranillo grapes and experimented with a new process, extended cryomaceration, in which the grapes are frozen prior to fermentation. This allows for more extraction of color and phenolics from the grape skins. This is a medium-bodied, dry red that would pair well with just about anything off the grill - burgers, steaks, and barbeque.

Vineyard Notes
The grapes in this Tempranillo primarily came from Bingham Vineyards in Meadow, Texas.
Production Notes
The grapes were harvested overnight and then crushed and de-stemmed at the winery upon arrival at the winery. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks which allow for better temperature control. The lots also received pump overs twice a day ensuring that the grapes receive adequate oxygen during the fermentation process. Throughout fermentation, the must was carefully monitored with our winemaker performing hand punch-downs multiple times per day. Pressing was done in batches using a bladder press after collecting the free run juices. The wine was then aged for 12 months in American oak barrels with medium toast from Kelvin and Mistral cooperages. In accordance with our philosophy of minimal intervention, the wine saw very gentle handling using gravity flow wherever possible and underwent only minimal fining and filtering before bottling in March 2017.
