2015 Kuhlken Vineyards Reserve
2015 Kuhlken Vineyards Reserve

This wine is a blend of Tempranillo, Merlot, Mourvèdre, and Cabernet Sauvignon from our estate vineyard with a small portion of Petit Verdot from Bingham Vineyards.

The estate blocks just north of Fredericksburg have been part of Texas winemaking for 20 years, and has produced many of the finest wines in Texas over the past two decades.  For this reason, from bud-break to the barrel the estate fruit takes highest priority in the cellar and receives the personal attention of David Kuhlken and his elite winemaking staff.  The fruit was harvested at daybreak, hand sorted at the crush pad, bin-fermented in small batches, pressed in a traditional basket press, and barrel aged for 15 months in French and American Oak barrels.  There was minimal intervention throughout the aging process.

2015 saw relatively early harvest for some of our Hill Country lots, in part because of the low yield brought on by spring hail at our estate vineyard.

Vineyard Notes
The Kuhlken Estate is located 12 miles north of Fredericksburg on the road to Llano. This vineyard, situated in the Hill Country AVA as well as the Bell Mountain sub-AVA has been the Kuhlken family’s vineyard home for over two decades. With 17 acres of grapes, it serves as the foundation for winemaking at Pedernales Cellars. It is here that David and Julie Kuhlken became a part of the Texas wine business, and where the next generation of winemakers and grape growers are being trained. Its rocky soils, gentle slopes, and almost constant Hill Country breezes serve to balance with our Texas summer sun to produce extraordinary vintages for red blends such as this.
Production Notes
The 2015 blend was selected by David Kuhlken and his assistant winemaker Demi Matar by evaluating every barrel from the 2015 estate blocks to create the best possible expression of the 2015 vintage from the family vineyard.
