Sustainable Farming: Our Partnership with Desert Willow Vineyard

At Pedernales Cellars, our story is deeply rooted in the soil of the Texas Hill Country. For us, sustainability is not a buzzword; it is a mandate for stewardship. As we look toward the future, we see a Texas wine industry that is increasingly resilient, technologically advanced, and deeply committed to regenerative practices. Put simply, the future of Texas viticulture is the future of Texas wine.
We carry these principles into our own estate, and we are proud to partner with growers who mirror our conviction. Desert Willow Vineyard, located in the High Plains near Seminole, is a pioneer in this movement. As one of the first certified organic vineyards in the state, the Warren family is redefining what it means to farm in Texas.
Across their 35 acres, the Warrens have meticulously planted Mediterranean varieties that thrive in the High Plains sun: Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Carignan, Alicante Bouschet, and Petite Sirah. While their first vines took root in 2016, their commitment was solidified five years later with their official organic certification – a rigorous journey that reflects their dedication to the land.
Regenerative Viticulture in Action
To the team at Desert Willow, “organic” is just the starting point. They employ a holistic system designed to strengthen the vineyard for generations to come. Their regenerative toolkit includes:
- Biodiversity & Cover Crops: Cultivating beneficial ground cover to enrich soil microbiology and naturally regulate vineyard floor temperatures.
- Integrated Pest Management: Utilizing organic solutions and natural predators to maintain a balanced ecosystem.
- Natural Fertilization: Introducing sheep into the vineyard rows to improve soil health through natural grazing, which simultaneously reduces carbon emissions by minimizing tractor passes.
- Soil Biome Stewardship: Consciously fostering a “living soil” to maximize nutrient availability and water retention.
- Precision Canopy Management: Active hand-work (and occasional “sheep” work) to ensure optimal airflow, reducing disease pressure without the need for harsh chemicals.
From Soil to Cellar
The true measure of this partnership is found in the bottle. We are currently preparing to bottle our second vintage of Aletheia Rosé, an elegant, vibrant blend of Grenache and Mourvèdre. Looking ahead, our cellar is maturing with five distinct wines from the 2024 vintage crafted entirely from these organic grapes, with even more planned for the 2025 harvest.
Cheers to the Warren family, and we look forward to many more vintages showcasing this amazing site.
