Pedernales Cellars

2015 Viognier Reserve

2015 is the fourth vintage for the Reserve Viognier.  As is our practice, this Viognier received hands-on treatment throughout and new French Oak for a short aging period.  The 2015 Viognier Reserve is selected from our High Plains vineyards. Immediately following harvest the grapes were pressed near the vineyard to limit skin contact.  Fermentation took place at Pedernales Cellars, initially in stainless steel, but a portion finished fermentation in new French Allier barrels and remained in barrel 4 months for aging.  The final blend is a melding of this barrel-aged Viognier which we put through full malolactic fermentation, and Viognier finished in stainless steel to provide a balance between the fresh fruit qualities, and the complexity and tannins of the barrel aged lot.

Wine Profile

Texas Reserve Class Champion at Rodeo Uncorked International Wine Competition
The grapes for the 2015 Viognier Reserve come predominately from the Bingham Vineyards in the Texas High Plains. These vineyards have been a key part of the Pedernales winemaking program from the beginning and provide some of the best premium grapes from the Texas High Plains. The Bingham Farm has been part of our Viognier program from the first Viognier Reserve vintage. Our 2015 Vintage in the High Plains was mild and rainy, by Texas standards. These conditions necessitated attention to detail in the vineyard, and rewarded well managed vineyards with an extended ripening period. A longer ripening period, like we experienced in 2015, allows the grapes to achieve more physiological ripeness which translates to enhanced varietal character in the glass.
