2018 Kuhlken Vineyards Touriga Nacional
2018 Kuhlken Vineyards Touriga Nacional

The Kuhlken Vineyards Touriga Nacional is one of our most prized blocks. There are few growing this variety in the US, let alone Texas, and we truly value its utterly unique flavors and aromas. We originally planted it in 2007 as part of our Port program (it is traditional in Portugal); however, since it has come of age, it has been sneaking into some of our best wines, such as the K-O. This will be the first time we have showcased it on its own and have elected not to fine it. Touriga is not comparable to other varieties. It is one of the few red grapes that you could consistently describe as having floral and mineral aromatics. It packs quite the punch in small clusters and is naturally low yielding. In the winery, we love that it adds a great deal of structure to blends, as well complexity in aromatics. We often find ourselves working to mitigate the tannins, mostly through fermentation techniques and specific barrel aging. This wine we find balanced nicely through small bin fermentations and use of new European oak.
