This wine has a great deal of character and intensity. You’ll find notes of bramble, tar, dark chocolate, blackberry jam, eucalyptus, dried currants, dried cherries on the nose. On the palate there is a minerality that underlies flavors of blackberry jam, cocoa, earth, and fresh green herbs. The tannins are slightly elevated and you'll find a pleasant finish with a hint of eucalyptus.
Elevation: 3300 ft.
Soil Type: Amarillo Fine Sandy Loam over Clay
This wine is the first varietal Tannat Pedernales has ever released. It is a relatively new grape to the cellar, and was planted for us by the folks at La Pradera Vineyards in Brownsfield, TX. Originally we slotted this variety to be used as a blending component for the rich flavors, tannin, and color it can contribute to a wine. However, after tasting this lot in the cellar, we decided this vintage was one that could, and should, stand alone. We hope you’ll enjoy this wine as much as we have - it is the first harvest off this block and we are looking forward to many more to come.
Food Pairing Notes
We find this wine especially complements smoked or cured meats, sausages, and game.
