Wineries

Texas Hill Country is Texas Wine Country.

Texas wine isn’t a secret anymore, but we thought we would give you an insight into some of our favorite places to taste wine in the Hill Country. This is by no means an exhaustive list. Since we can’t possibly list all of the wineries we love, we’ll just keep it simple.

The first three wineries makeup a great day trip to Stonewall. We have some amazing neighbors, and we hope you all visit them to see for yourselves.

The second list includes our partners in Texas Fine Wine, an organization that promotes the wineries that are shaping the future of Texas wine. These are wineries producing wine at the highest level, and they also happen to be great friends. (If you’re a club member, keep an eye out for a collaborative project in January.)

Pedernales Cellars

Look, we’re just being honest. No trip to wine country is complete without a stop at Pedernales. We know this, you know this, and now we can move on. We’ll see you soon!

Adega Vinho

Just up the road from Pedernales Cellars, behind a well manicured vineyard, lies Adega Vinho. The Bilger family began planting vines in 2016 and opened a tasting room in 2020. Pretty simply – we dig the wines, we dig the people, and we love their commitment to sustainability. It’s always nice to have neighbors that take stewardship of the land seriously.

Ab Astris

Ab Astris is just across 290, near Lyndon B. Johnson State Park. Family owned, and farming 12 acres of Hill Country vines, the team at Ab Astris welcomes guests in their elegant tasting room or on the covered patio. Check out the Clairette Blanche, a unique wine from a unique grape variety.

Going further afield, Bending Branch winery, a Texas Fine Wine partner, is located in Comfort, Texas. Bending Branch Winery is the Tannat House of Texas. It is known for its intense wines – from the high acidity in Picpoul Blanc to the bold tannins in Tannat. The winery was co-founded in 2009 by Winemaker Bob Young, M.D., MPH, and his wife Brenda. Bending Branch uses innovative winemaking processes such as Cryo-Maceration and Flash Détente to improve the color, structure and flavor of red wines.

Duchman Family Winery

From the outset, the goal at Duchman Family Winery has been incredibly ambitious. The wines produced at Duchman would be on par with the finest varietal examples in the world, and no less than that would be acceptable. By carefully selecting varietals suited for Texas and creating exacting standards for their handling in the winery, winemaker Dave Reilly and his team continue to meet and exceed those lofty expectations.

Spicewood Vineyards is one of the first Texas Hill Country wineries, established in 1992 and purchased by Ron Yates in 2007. It produces estate wines from 32 acres and a nearby 10-acre vineyard in Round Mountain. With a passion for Spanish varieties including Tempranillo, Graciano and Carignan, Spicewood Vineyards is also recognized for its estate Sauvignon Blanc.
