The Name
Pedernales Cellars is named after the Pedernales River that flows through the Texas Hill Country. Pedernales is Spanish for flint, and the idea came to David as he was working in the vineyard and found an old Indian arrowhead made from flint stone. When Fredrik one day was supervising construction at the winery, he found part of an old Indian flint stone axe. So there it was – a connecting element between the vineyard, the winery, the local area and its ancient history. That the name is in Spanish also reflects our dedication to the hot weather grape varieties, many of which have their origins in Spain.
