About Pedernales Cellars

Pedernales Cellars is the leading producer of Texas wines that focuses on traditional Spanish and Rhône varietals grown and produced in Texas.  Using 100% Texas-sourced fruit, including Tempranillo, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Albariño, and Touriga Nacional grown in our Hill Country estate vineyard, the winery has been producing award-winning wines since 2006.  The family has been growing grapes in Texas since 1995 and has helped usher in the era of high quality, Texas-terroir driven wines in the region.

Through the years, Pedernales has won numerous awards, including three Best of Texas awards at the HLSR Wine Competition in Houston for Viognier, as well as our High Plains Tempranillo.  Additionally, Pedernales Cellars made history being the first Texas wine to receive a grand gold in Europe with our 2012 Reserve Viognier at the Lyon International Wine Competition.  Over the years, countless Pedernales wines have scored gold and double gold at the San Francisco International Wine Competition and the Jefferson Cup.

Though many of our most exclusive wines are only sold at the tasting room or released exclusively to members of its wine club, several wines can be found at retailers and restaurants here in Texas.  These include the varietal Tempranillo and Viognier, as well as a Rhône blended red and rosé.  Select retailers such as HEB also carry the varietal Albariño and Malbec.

About the Owners

Today, Pedernales Cellars is led by a sister and brother pair who have grown up amidst the Texas wine industry, thanks to their parents’ passion for growing grapes in the Texas Hill Country.

David Kuhlken is a co-founder of Pedernales Cellars and has been the winemaker for the company since 2006.  His first experience with the Texas wine industry came when his parents, Larry and Jeanine planted the Kuhlken Vineyard north of Fredericksburg in 1995.  In 2005, David joined with Julie, his wife Heather, and Julie’s husband Fredrik Osterberg to start Pedernales Cellars.  He developed his winemaking style through collaboration with a number of local winemakers, as well as training through the UC Davis Viticulture and Enology certification program.

Dr. Julie Kuhlken co-founded Pedernales Cellars and is both a WSET III certified sommelier and a professor of philosophy from the University of London.  Her experience started when she helped Larry and Jeanine plant the very first blocks at the estate vineyard back in 1995.  Drawing on her art and engineering background from Stanford, she additionally designs all of the labels at Pedernales Cellars, and for many others in the industry.  Today, she runs the marketing, tasting room, and wine club side of the business.
